Reports To: Residential House Supervisor
Beginning Pay: $12.35 - 13.00 per hour
Full-time, set schedule position working 3 days during the work week, 10 hour shifts (10:30pm – 8:30am), and one, 10 hour shift on the weekend (10:30pm – 8:30am). The Youth Development Specialist (Specialist) position, provides direct care for children and youth living in an open residential program. Specialists see to the physical and emotional needs of the children and youth who have experienced some form of abuse and/or neglect. Specialists will model and teach appropriate social skills while working closely with a staff therapist to implement individualized treatment plans. This role demands an individual with strong relationship building skills, physical and emotional stamina and an ability to work in a team environment in order to provide a family like setting. Specialists act in a parental role by meeting basic needs of youth.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST – 3RD-SHIFT

II. NATURE OF WORK
The Specialist is responsible for providing direct care for the children who are the Agency’s clients. The dimensions of the Specialist’s responsibility are quite broad. At times, the Specialist acts in a parental role; meeting the basic needs of youth. The Specialist ensures that each child is healthy and safe, makes sure that each is properly clothed and fed and works to maintain a clean and orderly living space. Included in the parental role are the responsibilities to give praise, affection and encouragement to youth and to provide discipline when necessary.
At other times the Specialist is cast more in the role of a mentor, instructing youth in social skills, hygiene, basic values, spirituality, homework assignments and the like. The Specialist takes on the role of a trusted and patient adult friend, discussing a youth’s personal life, feelings and interpretations of the world.
Drawing all of these roles and responsibilities together is the Agency’s emphasis on relationships between staff and youth. Our belief is that all effective helping efforts begin with warm, caring, sound relationships. It is the Specialist’s responsibility to develop such therapeutic relationships with youth, and then to use and work through those relationships to stimulate and encourage growth.
Specialists are expected to work effectively and harmoniously as part of a team or teams within the Agency. Specific work responsibilities and work schedules will vary according to team assignment.
III. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
A. SAFETY AND SECURITY TASKS
1. Complete required bedroom and building security checks and log them as they are completed.
2. Secure all keys, confidential materials, sharp/harmful items
3. Lock and close all necessary doors and windows; secure agency vehicles
4. Monitor indoor and outdoor lighting
5. Provide oversight and assistance as needed to maintain safety and security campus wide
B. HOUSEKEEPING TASKS/CLEAN AND MAINTAIN LIVING AREA:
1. Each night 3rd shift staff are responsible for a scheduled list of housekeeping tasks. These tasks are to be completed in a timely manner and documented on shift.
2. Once a week there are deeper cleaning responsibilities, completed while both 3rd shift staff are present, and once a month there are end of the month cleaning responsibilities. All of these housekeeping tasks are designed with house and health inspections in mind and are crucial to 3rd shift job responsibilities
C. MEDICAL TASKS
1. Monitor health and wellness needs, report illnesses and injuries to nurses and others as outlined in agency policies
2. Pull all medications for the following day and check against medication logs for accuracy. Initial appropriately
3. Distribute medications as outlined in agency policies and procedures
4. Administer 1st Aid
D. PAPERWORK TASKS
1. Prepare new Behavior Observation Records for each day
2. Accurately complete Day Sheet for the following day
3. File paperwork
4. Record and compile data for all appropriate quality assurance forms
E. COMMUNICATION RELATED TASKS
1. Overlap information effectively with previous and following counselors to learn of major events, moods, significant difficulties, etc
2. Utilize communications logs
IV. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
A. Ability to communicate verbally and effectively to exchange information with coworkers, peers, the community, and others involved in your position.
B. Ability to maintain a stationary position for extended periods of time.
C. Ability to be physically mobile when working with students.
D. Ability to determine and assess job related documents and visually utilize Agency equipment.
E. Ability to physically handle and perform job related functions, including the operation of Agency equipment.
F. Ability to physically position oneself to effectively interact with students, including but not limited to squatting, kneeling, stooping & running.
G. Ability to ascend/descend stairs safely and successfully.
H. Ability to lift and transport 40lbs.
I. Ability to push and pull.
J. Ability to bend to facilitate physical restraints, complete cleaning responsibilities & to actively interact with students.
K. Ability to simply and firmly grasp when facilitating a physical restraint.
V. MINIMUM PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
A. High School Diploma or GED required by state licensing authority. Agency prefers a bachelor’s degree, or near completion, in a field related to the helping professions.
B. Minimum of 5 years related experience.
C. Good oral and written communication skills.
D. Good organizational skills
E. Good computer skills
F. Valid driver’s license, adequate insurance with a car available at all times.
G. Ability to work with a variety of people both within and outside the Agency and must promote a positive image for the Agency in the community and in relationship with other Agencies and their personnel.
H. Become familiar with and follow the code of ethics for your profession and agree to abide by the related Agency standards.
