In 2019, we (D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s) launched agency core values; 6 values that we will strive to live out through our work on a daily basis in order to provide the best possible care for the children and families we serve.
One of these values is creativity, and with creativity we are challenging ourselves to try something new.
We are thrilled to share that in 2020 we are releasing A Work of Heart, a blog and podcast by D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s! Every month you will get new posts from DABSJ staff surrounding important topics that we may not otherwise have the opportunity to share.
As an agency we are so excited to begin this project because it will give our staff and community members a chance to be RAW. To get PERSONAL. To share with you what’s going on at the heart of the agency. Our staff will have the opportunity to share what they are passionate about in their own voice.
With that said…Hi! My name is Megan and I have the pleasure of writing this introduction post. I have been with D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s for over six years now and am part of the Communications team.
If you’re curious what I mean, here’s a little more about me…
For 11 years my parents provided foster care to over 67 children in our community. I grew up in a home where children came in and out at a moment’s notice. Toddlers entered our homes with bruises and severe trauma. Babies came without ever knowing their parents. Some kids stayed for 24 hours and others for two years. I remember a few instances where the same child came back to us multiple times over a number of years.
We became a safe space for these children while their parents worked on themselves with the goal of being reunited. My parents offered these parents who desperately needed a moment to breathe a chance to do just that. Watch this video to hear more about my family's story.
Growing up in a family that provided foster care (and adopted) I saw SO much. I learned about trauma, abuse, neglect, hope, and reunification from a young age. It has absolutely shaped who I am today.
My passion for DABSJ runs deep, but I’m not the only one.
It is my hope that with Work of Heart you will be able to see the passion that truly runs through the veins of the staff that work here.
To kick us off in February, we will be sharing 5 Movies to Watch to Increase Cultural Awareness in Black History Month written by our Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, & Engagement, Andre Daley. Be sure to come back and read more about the amazing work of DABSJ.
