BBBS strategically approached Mill Steel as the first Bigs in Business pilot partner to expand the current relationship and connect with their professional staff. Mill Steel has now incorporated the Bigs in Business project as a permanent fixture in their daily operations, and is encouraging other businesses to replicate and implement Bigs in Business in their workplaces, in collaboration with BBBS.
The goal of the collaboration among East Kentwood, Mill Steel and BBBS is to provide workplace mentoring opportunities for high school youths. Participating youths are provided with the skills necessary to reach their full potential. The program reinforces the importance of academics, vocational and social skill development, and offers employees meaningful volunteer opportunities that can boost morale and engagement during the work day. Through safe, supported 1:1 match relationships youths in our program are exposed to the world of work, providing them with the skills necessary to be prepared for life, and reinforces the importance of academics, vocational and social skill development.
Company staff are matched 1:1 with students, based on their personalities and preferences. Once-a-month sessions include relationship, educational and skill-building activities, and Mill Steel provides the mentors, space, food, and transportation for all mentees. Currently, 16 students are participating. Thank you, Mill Steel, for impacting the lives of these children!
