Wyatt's World

Wyatt is part of DABSJ’s Enhanced Foster Care program, where he gets extra coordination and support to meet his unique needs.
He’s autistic, and his days are full — school, therapy, doctor visits, family time, and new experiences with his foster mom.
It can be a lot for one kid to handle. But with helpers guiding him, and care that’s coordinated and compassionate,
Wyatt is learning, growing, and beginning to feel safe again.

1. Foster Home

A place of stability, care, and daily routines with his foster family. It took some time for Wyatt to feel comfortable here but he is opening up more each day. He also gets mental health support here, as a therapist experienced in trauma comes regularly for in-home therapy. They help Wyatt process and understand the trauma he experienced in his family home.

Wyatt attends a traditional school with an IEP (Individualized Education Program for students with disabilities) in place, giving him the supports he needs to learn and grow alongside his peers. Most days, he likes school. It’s something he can count on.

Here, Wyatt works one-on-one with a behavioral therapist to build skills that help him navigate the world more confidently. His DABSJ caseworker checks in a lot to help make sure those skills and goals can be supported at home and in the classroom.

For most of Wyatt’s care, DABSJ comes to him. But he does visit the DABSJ office for psychiatric services and medication management. He always looks to see what new stuffed animals are in the lobby – but leaves them for other kids to enjoy.

Wyatt has regular visit time with his biological mom. They both like being outside, so they often come to the park. A parenting coach joins them to supervise and work on skills with Wyatt’s mom, in the hopes that one day they can be together as a family again. Reunification is the number one goal of foster care.

Wyatt loves going to Sensory Sundays at the museum with his foster mom, a special activity that helps him relax, explore, and enjoy time together. It’s quieter than regular museum times, and he has specific exhibits he always must see each time they go.
